Toothpaste Quantity Varies With Age

Toothpaste quantity recommendations actually vary with each age group. Babies who have teeth need to use no more than a certain amount. Oh and yes, babies should be cleaning their teeth if you ever wondered. As a matter of fact, everyone who has teeth should be cleaning their teeth.

Back to babies. Mothers with babies with teeth can put only a tiny amount of toothpaste- just about a rice grain – on a small size of cotton wool and use to clean their babies’ teeth gently.

Babies up to the age of three should use this quantity of toothpaste. Children aged 3years to 6years of age, however, should ensure to use a pea-sized amount of toothpaste to clean their teeth.

Kids Shhould be Supervised While Brushing

Children up to the age of six should be assisted by parents or guardians in brushing their teeth. Whoever is assisting or supervising a kid’s brushing should watch out and ensure to only dispense no more than a pea-sized amount of toothpaste for the kid.

Because of the sweet taste of kids’ toothpaste, they tend to swallow toothpaste. When children consume large amounts of toothpaste, over time they may develop dental fluorosis which may discolor their teeth and will be of cosmetic concern. They may also have stomach upset and other symptoms if they swallow significant amounts of toothpaste, so parents should ensure that this does not happen.

Adults should be using toothpaste the size of about two-thirds the length of their toothbrush.  This is just enough to cleanse your teeth properly and any more than that will be a waste of toothpaste. A lot of us are guilty of dispensing toothpaste the whole length of our toothbrushes and as a result, have been wasting toothpaste and money!

Apart from wasting money, especially if you’re using an expensive toothpaste brand, too much toothpaste will foam a lot and make it a little less easy to clean your teeth than when you use moderate amounts of toothpaste.

How Much Toothpaste Should You Use – Less is More

The message, in summary, is that when it comes to toothpaste, less is more. It is not true that the more toothpaste you use, the better you can clean out your teeth.

Using large amounts of toothpaste is wasteful and ingesting toothpaste in significant amounts can harm you. Even worse, ingesting toothpaste in significant amounts can discolor your teeth and also cause fluoride toxicity.

So if you have formed the habit of using more toothpaste than is required, be sure to start today to use the correct amount of toothpaste!
